How to Apply
Steps to take:
- Call the school to schedule a classroom visit. You are welcome to visit all classes.
- Submit a completed application form and schedule an interview/test date. The application and testing fee is $100 for all grades.
- Give your child's teachers the forms for letters of recommendation. Teachers must mail their letters directly to The Academy.
- If applicable, provide The Academy with transcripts.
Interview and Assessment Process
All entering students meet with the director for an interview and assessment. Admission is based on the interview and letters of recommendation, and, in the case of students entering first grade and above, on transcripts and a standardized entrance examination.
Kindergarten students participate in a 30-minute assessment with the director. They are asked to follow a series of simple directions, including reciting numbers and the alphabet, drawing a self portrait and assembling a puzzle. Children are made to feel safe and comfortable at every step of the way.
Entering first grade students work one-on-one with the director for their assessment. Students read simple stories aloud and answer yes and no questions. Math skills are assessed with addition and subtraction problems, place value, and counting by fives and tens. A brief writing exercise is also administered. Students also have a time to visit with their grade level class to meet the students and teacher. The evaluation process takes approximately 1.5 hours.
Prospective second through eighth-grade students take a standardized exam that assesses their abilities in the areas of reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, math computation and math concepts (for the older children). All students are invited to visit their respective classes. Ideally prospective students spend an entire day at The Academy.
The application is complete when:
- You have submitted the application form and related fee.
- Your child has been interviewed, and has taken the test, if applicable.
- The school has received your child's transcripts, if applicable.
- The school has received letters of recommendation from your child's teachers.
Decisions are mailed in March.
